Launching our new blog...

Hi everyone! I am taking Colleen up on her brilliant idea of starting a blog. The emails have only taken us so far, let's see if we can find a blog useful for keeping us connected. I am hoping that we can use this space to let everyone know about neonatal (and pediatric too!) events and resources. Here in Canada we are a small but mighty group, and networking is very important for keeping us connected. I encourage you all to check in here and introduce yourself again. This is a site for all of us! Lenora

  1. Thanks Lenora (and Colleen for suggesting the blog)! I look forward to following the great work and thoughts of the brilliant neonatal/peds nursing minds that belong to this group:).

As per Lenora’s recommendation, I will reintroduce myself. My name is Taslin and I work for Perinatal Services BC (formerly the BC Perinatal Health Program). I am the Coordinator, Knowledge Translation under the new structure, and prior to that I was the Neonatal Nurse Consultant when we were still BCPHP. I came to Vancouver from Toronto as part of the staff of Sunnybrook’s (formerly Women’s College Hospital) NICU. During my time as a staff nurse there, I was also a research assistant for a couple of studies looking at pain practices and behaviours in the prem population.

My role as Coordinator of KT is still new and quite a learning curve for me so even though I finished my Master’s a few years ago, I feel like I’m still studying (and hopefully evolving!).

I look forward to learning from everyone’s stories and experiences, and hopefully being able to share some of my own from time to time. Thanks for the invite, Lenora! Happy Holidays everyone:)…Tas

  2. Hi Tas, thanks for being the first responder! I guess it never hurts to try to get "high tech". I didn't realize you had done some pain research - did you work with Bonnie Stevens? The CIHR team in children's pain has put out quite a lot of research. Some of the peds folks with us here I believe have an interest in that area..Lenora

  3. Hello! Thanks Colleen for suggesting this blog. I'm not a blogger but I guess it was just a matter of time... and it's nice to follow fellow students and APN's in the Neo/Peri world.

Not to "flog the blog" with more on pain, but I recently came across an interesting article from the Neonatal Network entitled, "An Ounce of Prevention: Decreasing Painful Interventions in the NICU" (Keitha Mountcastle, 2010). I intend to incorporate this into our course work and thought I would share this with you all.

To reintroduce myself, my name is Tara Loutit and I have been a neonatal nurse since 1999 at BC Women's Hospital. Although still casual there, I now work full time at BCIT in the Neonatal Specialty Program. I am part time in the APL stream and started in 2009. I also work casual for a private air ambulance company and just got back from sunny San Diego yesterday for a baby 'coming home' (BC's NICU) for Christmas. I'm married and have 2 boys (1&3) and live in North Vancouver, BC.

My area of interest that I will focus my final project on is moral distress in the NICU - mainly focusing on the NICU nurse. I look forward to hearing from everyone across the country and your interests too.

Thanks for setting up this blog Lenora!
I wish all of you a very happy holiday!

    Tara

P.S. Does anyone use water proof tape to bridge umbilical lines anymore like the baby on this blog page? Just curious...

  4. Hello everyone and happy holidays! I am looking forward to some interesting discussion with those of you I have met and am looking forward to meeting those of you who are new to me.
My name in Andrea and I was working at BC Children's Hospital in all areas of acute care. My specialty is cardiology and I have also worked in the outpatient cardiology clinic. I was also employed by Langara College as a Clinical Nurse Educator on the neuro-surgical unit. I have just accepted a new position as a research nurse for the Vaccine Evaluation Centre on the BCCW premises.
I have only one elective to go and am beginning the daunting task of starting my final project. I am looking at chronic care coordination and transitional care from hospital to home for medically complex children. I am proposing a CNS role creation for this much needed service in our facility.
Hope to catch up with you all soon. I will be taking a little hiatus for the next couple weeks to concentrate on my literature review but will connect in the new year.

    Andrea

  5. Hi. I’m Colleen. I’ve been working casual in the NICU at Surrey for the last few years. This past year I have not picked up many shifts as I have been finishing up coursework for my degree. Now there is only the small matter of a thesis standing between me and my MN.
For a change for this New Year, I am booked for quite a bit of work in the next few weeks. ...starting tomorrow. Today I am basking in the solitude of my kids’ first day back to school.
